The Museum of Altamira has been working for more than a decade with the deaf community to make its facilities and cultural proposal accessible. The Museum pioneered the creation of a brochure in Spanish Sign Language, for which it even created the signs for some key words during the visit such as "Museo de Altamira" and "Neocueva".
Subsequently, several signage guides were created to allow the tour of the permanent exhibition and the environment through various videos in Spanish Sign Language. In addition, monthly guided tours of the Neocueva accompanied by an Spanish Sign Language Interpreter are offerered in collaboration with the Federation of Deaf People's Associations of Cantabria.
Other actions have been added over time, such as the training of personnel working with the public in Spanish Sign Language or the celebration of the Spanish Sign Language Day at the Museum. Therefore, on the occasion of the International Museum Day and the slogan 2020 Museums for equality: diversity and inclusion, the Museum of Altamira will speak in its social networks in Spanish Sign Language, as a gesture of our commitment to the integration of deaf people in our daily life of the Museum.
