Moriscos. The exiled Spaniards

There are a large number of documentary references to the expulsion of the Moriscos. These cover a chronological arc that begins at the end of the 16th century until the last third of the 17th century. These documents range from the reports on the advisability of disarming the Moriscos communities before the expulsion to the papers referring to the repopulation of abandoned places and occupation of the vacant property due to the expulsion. It also includes consultations and briefs on the transmission and rights of movable and immovable property and all other properties of that population, while gathering documents that indicate both losses and compensation, as well as the exemption from census, together to issues related to the meetings held to resolve the situation of the houses and places belonging to the Moriscos, summaries on the way to repopulate the royal lands and any circumstance related to that historical event that affected the territories of the Crown of Aragon.

The repertoire of documentary sources that we have compiled refers to various aspects of what is known as the "Moriscos problem". It includes the background, the years immediately prior to the expulsion, the policies developed –years before– with the Moriscos population, the vicissitudes in which the expulsion occurred and the social and economic consequences derived from forced emigration. These documents specify the days prior to the expulsion and reflect the details of how the expulsion was carried out and the problem of repopulating the abandoned lands in each territory.
