Introduction to exporting cultural assets

Exporting results when a cultural asset that forms part of the Spanish Cultural Heritage leaves Spanish territory for another country, including countries within the European Union.

Express authorisation should be made for such exports in advance on an official form.

Failure to comply with the conditions of returning those assets to Spain that were exported temporarily will be considered as illegal exportation.

In accordance with legislation in force, the exportation of property that forms part of the Spanish Cultural Heritage without the required authorisation, will represent:

• A crime of contraband (if the value of the asset or assets is greater than 18,000 euros).
• An infraction (if the value is lower than 18,000 euros).
