One of the principal functions of the National Museum and Research Centre of Altamira is to make available to the public the knowledge produced under its auspices. As a museum, the institution considers questions as diverse as the role of museology, museography, cultural heritage management, World Heritage and cultural tourism, as well as the necessity of including a few gender-based perspectives in each new development. Likewise, temporary exhibitions, research and conservation of the cave of Altamira and other national and international research projects, constitute an important part of the activity of this institution.
