The painter offers a long head portrait and regards the spectator with an inquisitive and penetrating gesture. The paintings on the walls make up and fill the space, vindicating the artist as a painter.
The presence of a blank canvas to the right of the painting probably serves as homage to Velázquez’s ‘Las Meninas’ and the craft of the painter. Along these lines, Sorolla recovers the Golden Age tradition of a dark, sombre colour palate with touches of brilliance in certain areas, such as the head or the shirt collar.
The oblong format is innovative. Sorolla uses it in many of the portraits dedicated to subjects for whom he felt special intellectual admiration or who were part of his close circle.
