The Ladies’ Library was created in 1985 by Marisa Mediavilla Herreros with the objective of concentrating the historical memory of women in Spain in one place.

In 2006, the "Ladies’ Library" Association donated the collection to the Instituto de la Mujer and since 2011, its collection has been conserved in the installations of the Museo del Traje Library and can be consulted in its Reading Room.

Thus, it constitutes a library specialised in the role played by women over the course of our history with the ultimate goal of recovering, organising, conserving and spreading the bibliographic and documentary heritage that illustrates their history. It gathers together the literature written about or by women and documents the birth and development of the feminist movement in Spain.

Objectives:

  • Bring together women’s culture and know-how through history, particularly in Spain.
  • Raise visibility of women’s contribution to society.
  • Become a meeting-place and centre for exchanging information and experiences.
  • Collect and conserve documents drawn up by the feminist movement.
  • Its collection comprises around 30,000 volumes, made up of feminist and feminine studies and essays, biographies, works of artistic and literary creation, magazines and special collections.
