In December 2017 the Ministry for Education, Culture and Sport obtained the contemporary fashion collection of journalist and collector Felip Salgado, from Zamora, for the Museo del Traje. It is one of the most important collections of contemporary designers in the world today.
The collection, part of which was purchased by the State and part of which was donated by Salgado himself, is made up of 227 pieces which include complete outfits, individual garments and accessories. It is a marvellous example of avant-garde fashion by designers including Martin Margiela, Bernard Willhelm or Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe, new talents who are shaking the world fashion scene such as Simon Porte Jacquemus, and work from historical names in fashion like André Courrèges. Spanish avant-garde designers including Sybilla and Elena Martín Lamothe are also represented.
The arrival of this collection at the Museo del Traje is hugely important, not only in terms of displaying it to the public but also in order to study modern fashion with the inclusion of names and tendencies which, until now, were not present in the permanent collection. With this collection the Museo completes, in many aspects, its museological statement begun with previous additions such as the acquisition of part of the Quinto-Tinarelli collection in 2006.
