In daily life bags, purses, wallets and handbags are essential for safeguarding money and personal effects. The variety of such objects meant that gags and pouches of many shapes and sizes were used. The main novelty of the age was introduced in the neo-classical period and its small size earned it the nickname ridículo ("ridiculous"), a pun on its French name, reticule. Usually made of velvet, and decorated with beadwork, the ridículo was rounded in shape, closed with a metal clasp, and was attached to a chain.
