Paradise Lost

At the end of the 19th century, the ethnographic museums idealised the rural and pre-industrial culture, as opposed to a homogeneous urban society removed from nature. ‘Popular’ was associated with an anonymous mass – the people-, as opposed to the urban culture. One of the most triumphant images was that of the shepherd, representing an idyllic life in harmony with nature and in stark contrast to the busy city life.
